A painted self-portrait A Self Portrait
Hi, my name is Therena, I am an illustrative photographer specializing in maternity, newborn and fine art portraits. I am a mother of three wonderful children and wife to a very loving and supportive husband.
For as long as I can remember I have loved art and considered myself an artist. I have a gift to see the beauty around me, especially in people. And one of my greatest joys in life is showing others the beauty that I see in them.
I am a perfectionist by nature, especially when it comes to my art. I carefully sculpt and direct every aspect of every image that I take, in order to capture the essence of beauty that I see. In all of us exists the desire to be beautiful and to be the masterpiece of some great artist. I want to give that opportunity to my clients.
I want you to exist in portraits for your children, but not just any portrait that was taken on a whim, I want you to exist in a masterpiece.
I love capturing the fragile beauty of a newborn and the loving connection between a parent and their child. I love capturing women that have struggled their entire life to make peace with themselves and show them how truly beautiful they are. I love watching as my clients come into my studio, often scared and nervous, and transform and blossom into the strong confident person within.
To me, nature is the ultimate masterpiece, and one of the greatest sources of my inspiration. I will often use aspects of nature within an image whether it be flower crowns or delicate floral headpieces. I love the feeling of being connected to earth within my photography and as such a lot of my art will reflect my love for nature.
I am also a dreamer and a creative. I love exploring these aspects within my photography. From whimsical to fantasy, glamourous to elegant, anything is possible during a photo session!
So I invite you to join me on my artistic adventure, I invite you to be the masterpiece that you are. I look forward to photographing your dreams!
Want to know more about me? Well, a picture says a thousand words, so I have added some photos of my favorite and most important events in my life below. Photography has been there to capture all the important moments and people in my life. I believe in quality art and I believe in existing in photos for your children. I believe that investing in a good photographer is worth it.
Ucluelet 2007When my husband and I eloped in 2007, we hired a professional photographer. It was our biggest "wedding" expense, and I am so glad that we decided to get it done! Because at the end of the day you leave your wedding with two things - a new husband, and your wedding pictures! A Formal OccationIn September 2008 my husband and I did the big family wedding. And though it was a grand event, my absolute favorite part was the professional pictures. It was the highlight of my day, looking and feeling like a model in my beautiful wedding dress.
My Family is my first loveMy most treasured possessions are the professional photos I have of my family and children. Having these moments captured forever is priceless. Michael - my first bornSince the moment I first became a mom, having professional pictures taken was my number one priority on the list of things to get done Marcus - my second born sonAs my family grew, so did my love for photography and the meaning of capturing them with a professional photographer Aurora - my youngest When it came time to get Aurora's images we traveled 3 hours just to get to a photographer who's style I loved, because capturing these fleeting moments in the best quality possible was important to me
Worth the tripCapturing my pregnancy with a professional photographer has always been the highlight of my pregnancy, because in all of them it was the one time I felt beautiful and was able to focus on what I wanted instead of what everyone else needed Breastfeeding sessionRealizing that Aurora will likely be my last baby ever I made a point of asking a photographer friend of mine to capture us together in a breastfeeding session - selfies just wasn't capturing the beauty of the moment as I envisioned it
The start of a DreamWhen I had Aurora my dream of actually becoming a professional photographer was born. After having my portrait taken by many photographers it was like a light came on and a passion was born. Ever since then I started taking courses and investing in my business and developing my art, practicing every single day - yes I have a lot of photos now! Half marathons - what?!?I wasn't always a Photographer. I actually got my degree in Kinesiology in 2005. In 2013 I discovered running, and decided that for my first race I would do the Lululemon half marathon. I've never been known to make small goals or dreams. It's always been dream big or go home. I have run every half marathon since except last year as I missed the entry. I even ran it when I was 7 months pregnant with Aurora - yes I was crazy. But I am looking forward to this year's race!
My dad and IEver since I can remember, my dad has loved photography. He was always reading and learning the technical part of it and as we traveled the world it was one of his passions to capture the world around him. 4 generations - my Ouma, Mom, myself and AuroraWhen my Ouma last came to visit Canada I made a point of getting all of us in front of one of my professional photographer friends' lenses. This is one of my favorite photos, because it has my Ouma and mom in it.
Michael, Marcus & Aurora - my three childrenOne of the best perks to being a photographer is that I get to capture beautiful portraits of my children on a ongoing basis - given they cooperate!
My Christmas Wish:A beautiful portrait of my children, no tears and all looking at the camera!
Aside from running and photography I love camping, hiking, biking with my family and being in nature. I also love creating fine art, whether it be pencil sketching, watercolor or oil painting. I also love knitting which my Ouma taught me a few years ago when she was visiting us from South Africa. I was born and raised in South Africa and moved to Canada in 1996 when I was 13 years old. I love swimming and karate and used to be in the provincial team when I was younger. My favorite place in the world is next to the ocean listening to the waves on a windy day.
