Sometimes I get inspired by the roots of my past and cannot help but create from the heart.
A little back story, I am originally from South Africa, I lived there till I was 13 before I immigrated to Canada. I have returned a few times to visit family and enjoy the beautiful country. While I love living in Canada and got married to a Canadian, I often find myself longing for my roots. For friends who speak in my first language and that can relate to the challenge of having grown up in South Africa and then moved to Canada.
Sometimes life brings us a full circle, and when I found out that my client was South African I could not help but design a set up to "take us back to our roots". The black cast iron pot, known as a "potjie" is probably one of the most iconic South African meals. It is used over an open flame fire and filled with a delicious stew, often enjoyed with friends and family. It brings memories of togetherness and belonging.
I did not tell my client that I designed this set up for her, keeping it a surprise till the session. When I finally captured her beautiful son in it, she revealed to me that her own father collects "potjies" and probably owns almost 30 of them! What are the odds!
What inspires you? Do you have something unique that captures your roots? I would love to hear it!
